I find them useful to get an at-a-glance page of what's new, a bit like a
homebrew version of google news. I use a package called Amphetadesk which
handles downloading the feeds and puts things all together for me.
Development on Amphetadesk appears to have stalled, but it does everything
I need - I'm sure there are newer improved apps now.

I suppose there could be exploits using weaknesses in XML parsers, but I'm
not aware of any (although I admit I haven't really looked).
