No, we're not using heading numbering, mostly because each chapter is an 
independent document.
  
That said, I'm afraid I don't see how heading numbering would help the 
situation, unless I'm willing to build the table of contents with {tc} codes. 
 In case I'm not making myself clear, what I want is:
  
      First section..................  8-1
      Second section.................  8-3
      Last section...................  8-7
  
The problem isn't in defining the "8-" -- that would be a cinch.  The problem 
is that the place it would go in the ToC field instructions (the divider 
between the text and the page number) can, as defined by Word, only be one 
character long.
