Risk of damage. Risk of loss. That sort of thing.
For instance, if you're going backpacking/camping, you might want to take a
scanner to listen to weather reports or see what far-off signals you can hear
from the top of a mountain. Of course, you may slip and fall on your
scanner, or drop it in a creek, or leave it sitting on a rock when you hike
out... Better to lose something you paid $40 for than something you paid $400
for.
