KS>> CBIP - SF: THE COBRA TRILOGY by Timothy Zahn - One of the more
KS>> thoughtful treatments of the cyborg soldier idea, complete with a
KS>> healthy regard for the Law of Unintended Consequences. The first book
KS>> takes one of the original recruits for the Cobra project and follows
 KS>> him through his career.  The soldier part is actually fairly short;
KS>> the real meat of the book comes in the "ok, we've created all these
KS>> supersoldiers, the war is over, and we can't reverse the process that
KS>> created them. Now what?" part. The book ends with their solution.

RB> Would this have been stimulated by Vietnam? I heard some

I think you may find a great many of those who went for that
were not actually special forces, or any kind of Vietnam Vet.
There were a lot of phonies.

Vietnam vets, and Vietnam era vets have an overall better
success rate in our society than the average person.

OTOH, I have known a lot of Vietnam vets who do carry a lot
around inside them. Most do not talk about it. Some I have known
for nearly 30 years and just know what has slipped out or others
told me. One of them I had known was in the engineers, but just
recently, within the last year, found out he flew as a gunner on
a helicopter. Another came back and never left the Toledo area
again, not even for his Grandmother's funeral in Arkansas. The
furthest he ever went was about 50 miles to the Veteran's home
when his father was placed there as his health deteriorated.

Some strange things indeed. OTOH, I have found that's not
unusual for veterans of any war.
