Hello All!
I know I owe notes to several of you but thought a general note about what
winter can do North of 60 would be interesting. We in Whitehorse are now
in our third day of -40øF weather and have lots of ice fox because parts of
the Yukon River are still open. Needless to say, many cars won't start and
some unlucky souls have heating problems.
However, we have no wind and planes can land and traffic can move albeit
slowly so we have managed to avoid the fate of the good citizens of
Kaktovik, AK. Kaktovik is a community on the shore of the Beaufort Sea east
of Prudhoe Bay and while they were having -45ø weather with a lot of wind,
both their primary and secondary generators failed, It looked as if
evacuation might be in order but a crew was brought in by helicopter and
they were able to restore power.
Anyway, it is -44ø as I write. My Honda is plugged in and I'm off to bed.
Take care,
Steven Horn (steven.horn{at}gmail.com)
