| subject: | Hunter becomes hunted ... |
STEVE KEMP said "Hunter becomes hunted ..." to DON MARTIN, adding:
DM> SK> It's been too long that we've "experimented" with molesters,
DM>thinking > that they can be "retrained" or rehabilitated. It's
DM> > that they pretty much shown can't be.
DM> WK> That's just 'cause the "treatments" are too
mamby-pamby. Give
DM> WK> 'em the "Clockwork Orange" treatment. That'll fix
'em right up.
DM> WK> Maybe skip the soundtrack though.
DM> You don't like Beethoven?
SK> Ahh, a class-ist question.
You say this as if it were a bad thing to prefer Bach,
Mozart, Beethoven, etc. over the works of such masters as
Elvis Presley; I would call it an educated thing and have
always let others make of that what they will.
There has been something of a movement in the past
couple of decades to regard "elitism" as a dirty word (which
movement was mostly the work of people so thoroughly
invested in the victim mentality--where massive feelings of
inferiority go to dwell--that they perceived any taste not
their own as a threat to their well-being), but had I
thought this sport of political correctness had finally
faded out.
SK> (hint: the question tells more than the answer)
Does it? I asked the question in regard to dropping the
soundtrack of The Clockwork Orange; IIRC, the central
character's greatest favorite was Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
Burgess was making the point that, contrary to certain
educational theories, getting sociopaths to enjoy such high
cultural artifacts would not make them socialized, or, as
the old joke puts it, "You can lead a horticulture, but you
can't make her think."
Just what _did_ my question "tell" you?
