Like any other hobby, you can spend as much or as little as you like. Good 
used stuff can be had at hamfest for well under $50, or you can go the other 
route and buy a top-of-the-line full coverage reciever for a couple of 
thousand. But on the acverage, a good new scanner that has most of the 
features you could ever want is gonna run you around $300.ÿ
