RW>> I try not to. I do machine heads for the guy across the
RW>> parking lot. Mainly because we trade labor...I machine his
RW>> stuff and he takes care of my cars...That way, I don't get
RW>> greasy.
JP>
JP> You are an evil person.
Yes, but I am a clean, evil person..:)
RW>> I've got a 400 Pontiac block with a 455 crank in it.
JP>
JP> KEWL !!!
JP>
RW>> Although, I had a real automotive machine shop do the work.
RW>> To my specs. The crank has the main journals turned down to
RW>> fit the 400 block. Had to weld up and turn the thrust main
RW>> to fit the 400, which isn't as wide as the 455. Had the
RW>> crank re-heat treated, ground and polished. Had the block
RW>> decked after I measured it for deck height and found it way
RW>> off. It's now got .020 deck height on all 8 pistons. It's
RW>> waiting for the day I get time to finish putting it
RW>> together. Needs everything besides crank, rods and pistons.
JP>
JP> If you ever want to get rid of it let me know. I have a great set of
JP> heads. The kid I am building the 455 for would love to spend his
JP> money on something else to make him faster.
I started to build it for my 70 Firebird. That's when I had an employee to do
machining, while I played. I'd contemplate selling the 455, but for now, I'm
gonna hang onto it.
RW>> I could do the machine work, but I'd farm out the welding.
JP>
JP> All I need is a friend with a welder (have one of those) and a
JP> friend with a band saw. (lacking that one)
Band saw's are cheap. We've usually got guys from North Carolina with a
pickup full of shop equipment running around, where you can buy the whole
load for $350...Guess they're pretty hard up if they have to come all the way
to CA to sell their goods.
JP> Hehehehhe I hear ya. I can put two pieces of metal together. It is
JP> permamant. It is not pretty.
I tried that once. Didn't look good. When I took it down the street to my
buddy, he said "Would you like me to grind off that ugly weld first?" I gave
up after that...
... Go ahead, keep honking....I'm reloading!!!
