SH> I thought you might want to know that today we celebrated dicovery of
SH> gold iun the Klondike. George Washington Carmack, Skookum Jim and
SH> Dawson Charlie discovered the mother lode in Rabbit Creek (now Bonanza
SH> Creek) on August 16, 1896 and recorded the claim the following day.
SH> However, it took almost a year for the news to get
"outside" and the
 SH> rest is history.

Ironically gold was noted in Yellowknife by prospectors on their way to
the Klondike in 1898 but the initial quantities found were small and the
assays low so the area was ignored for decades. It wasn't until 1933
that Johnny Baker and Herb Dixon made the first significant strike.

Ultimately Yellowknife was bigger than the Klondike (15 million oz vs 12
million) but it was a long drawn out industrial operation and not as
colourful or romantic as the rush of '98.

Cheers

Jim, in Yellowknife
