JUPITER IN GRAND VIEW

Jupiter, a month past opposition, is now shining high in the southeast to
south during evening -- the brightest "star" in the sky. What can you
detect on the planet's changing face with your telescope? See our new
Observing Guide to Jupiter in the May SKY & TELESCOPE, page 67, or the old
article online at:

CERES RENDEZVOUS

Ceres, the first-discovered asteroid, passes just 1 arcminute south of the
star Delta Librae on Saturday evening the 21st. Ceres is magnitude 7.2;
Delta Librae is 4.9. Use the finder chart in the May SKY & TELESCOPE, page
56, to find Ceres any night this week.

SKY AT A GLANCE

The Moon is first-quarter on the night of Sunday the 15th; it shines near
Jupiter on the 19th and Spica on the 20th while gibbous; it's full on the
23rd. Venus is slowly creeping into view low in the sunset. These items
and more are in "This Week's Sky at a Glance":
