Hello, Phil...
Sunday October 26 1997, Phil Turnbull said to Steve Quarrella:
SQ>> Cobb was one of the greats on the field, but was a rotten Peach off the
SQ>> field, and is in the HOF for his performance on the field. Rose is
SQ>> kept out of the HOF for his performance off the field, but not on, and
SQ>> he too was one of the greats. What am I missing here?
PT> well i agree with you totally...Rose should be in the HOF...his career
s
PT> one to be proud of...so what his personal life was messed up...Cobb was
PT> monster but that was then and this is now...
I don't think it's a "that was then and this is now" issue, though. If my
memory serves, Orlando Cepeda has pretty much been kept from the HOF for his
off-the-field performance with drugs. I understand that, and I understand
why Shoeless Joe Jackson is off-limits as a member, given his role in the
Black Sox scandal. In the case of Rose, well, nobody proved that he gambled
on his own team, and come on, there has probably been plenty of gambling on
baseball games BY baseball players. Anyways, if Rose is kept out for his
"off-the-field performance," why doesn't that disqualify Cobb or Babe Ruth,
using the same criteria? [Rhetorical questions, I know. :) ] There's
actually a disclaimer on the HOF's web-site where they pretty much reserve
the right to make up the rules as they go along. :-/
Someone, play Devil's Advocate on me here. Am I all wet?
While I'm thinking about it, was it Juan Marichal who took a baseball bat to
John Roseboro during a game? Is Marichal in the HOF?
PT> seems we have to destroy everything we are trying to build...ROSE
PT> BELONGS IN THE HOF....
I was fortunate enough to be in Cincinnati on Labour Day when Pete, Jr.
played his first game. After a childhood of worshipping the likes of Pete,
Sr., it was -eerie- to see #14 at third base again. Unfortunately, the brass
at Riverfront didn't seem to be fans of Pete, Sr., as I saw at least one
"Reinstate Pete, Sr." sign confiscated. :-/
