Sheila:
You are definitely correct in that when I taught at MSU, it was the era
of getting stoned in public.
BUT, these days alcohol has really made a resurgance on college campuses
and it has certainly been termed a MAJOR problem. More kids are becoming
alcoholics, and disciplinary/criminal problems that are alcohol-related
have increased. I don't think it would be too far-fetched to surmise
that this problem would extend into the classroom. I can't say for sure,
but such a conclusion is plausable. It would be nice to get some input
from people currently teaching college.
Regarding high school, I teach at an affluent, very high academic
school. In fact, we were fourth in our regions (Mich., Ind., Oh.) on the
AHSME/AIME (3 of the schools above us were private and/or magnet
schools; we are a public school). I only give you this information
because I want to point out that drugs and alcohol are a BIG problem at
our school. I am in administration and I am privy to some of the
information in this area.
Alcohol is making a big comeback here. We are very concerned about
inhalent use, too. So far, that has not been a big problem, but the kids
involved are suffering devastating consequences.
