I had planned on trying to make a quilt of my son's old clothes too.
I'd never made a quilt before, but the more I thought about it, the
more I dreaded getting started!  So, I've decided to just make the
wall hanging thing, with the styrofoam.  My eyes hurt too much to
try to sew much at a time.  I can just cut smaller squares of their
clothing, I guess.
Good luck, whether you try a quilt or whatever.  The important thing is
to use their clothing in some way.
