Are you interested in listening to anything in particular? Police? Fire?
Business? Railroads? (Everything but phone calls is legal - so far.)
You can head to your local Radio Shack and grab a catalog and maybe listen to
some of the action on their display scanners. Radio Shack doesn't have the
very best scanners, but they are plenty good enough for starting out. Most
Radio Shack stores have a store list of frequencies in use in your area, plus
they all sell a book called "Police Call Plus" that will cover your state.
Also, get a subscription to "Monitoring Times." I ordered mine with a credit
card from Grove Enterprises at 1-800-438-8155 (US & Canada) or (704)
837-9200. This will keep you current in what's going on. It will also tell
you how to make antennas and protect yourself from lightning - that kind of
stuff.
And of course, you can ask questions here!
