Hi All! After Disability: A Guide to Getting on with Life. Lisa Bendall (Key Porter Books, Canada: 2006). ISBN: 1-55263-747-6 (Paperback, $20). "A practical, information-packed guide for Canadians learning to live with a disability" Don't let the "Canadian" part mislead you -- the only Canada specific part is in the references to various agencies and organizations which are listed throughout the book. The ten chapter titles are: 1) Acceptance, Self-Advocacy and the Law 2) Assistive Devices and Technology 3) Accessible Housing 4) Financial Considerations 5) Health and Health Care 6) Employment and Education 7) Relationships, Sexuality and Parenting 8) Transportation 9) Sports, Recreation and the Arts 10) Travel Each chapter discusses the issues which face a person with a disability and makes suggestions for techniques, tips, tricks, and outside assistance to help resolve those issues. At the end of each chapter is a list of agencies and organizations which might be of use in helping solve problems, and it is this list which is specifically Canadian (plus some of the chapters, such as Health, which are based on the Canadian situation). I highly recommend that you have a read through -- it's only 170 pages -- and you'll probably find a few ideas you haven't thought of! If your public library doesn't have it, they should and any decent bookseller can order for you. Cheers...
