 SH>>> abbatoir.

BF>> What is a abbatoir? I don't find that in my dictionary.

 JW> An animal slaughter house.

BF> Oki, thanks, but why didn't I find it in my dictionary?

It's actually spelled abattoir. And it's not a commonly used word; it's
not in my "pocket" dictionary either, just my bigger one.

BF> Isn't it a English word? Sounds French to me.

It's a French word the English borrowed. English is really a mixed
language. Most words have Anglo-Saxon roots but abattoir and butcher
(from "bouchier") are Norman French and slaughter is a Viking word.

Cheers,

Jim
