-=> Quoting Bj”rn Forsstr”m to Jim Weller <=- SH>>> abbatoir. BF>> What is a abbatoir? I don't find that in my dictionary. JW> An animal slaughter house. BF> Oki, thanks, but why didn't I find it in my dictionary? It's actually spelled abattoir. And it's not a commonly used word; it's not in my "pocket" dictionary either, just my bigger one. BF> Isn't it a English word? Sounds French to me. It's a French word the English borrowed. English is really a mixed language. Most words have Anglo-Saxon roots but abattoir and butcher (from "bouchier") are Norman French and slaughter is a Viking word. Cheers, Jim ... Danish isn't a language, it's a throat condition. ___ Blue Wave/386 v2.30 [NR] --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 123/140 500 106/2000 633/267 |
