subject: Re: Visual C++ Error message

From: "Glenn Meadows"

I now have a second laptop that is throwing this error.

I don't believe either have a date error. On one, it appears to be a
partial update to .Net 2.0.

For example, when I go to uninstall the Blackberry Desktop software, it
stops in the middle, and says that there is a pending install for .Net 2.0
that has to be completed prior to being able to do this uninstall. There
is a pending .Net security patch (machine is cloning the HD at the moment,
so I can't look as to the exact pending update).

I've already installed the latest 3.1.1 V2 installer on the original machine.

When this error comes up, sometimes the error will get in a continuous
loop, calling itself over and over again. I've got to kill the msiexec.exe
from the Task manager to get out of it.

The error simply means that the application in question called abort()
directly or indirectly. There is an ambiguity in the message. The title
is the name of the EXE in the process containing the C runtime. It may not
be the caller of abort(). In other words, this may not be a problem with
MSIEXEC but instead with the component being installed. Then again, it
might be MSIEXEC but if you installed the latest release of 3.1 I would
expect it to be this. It could be something weird like geo suggested with
a far future date that causes some CRT functions to appropriately call
abort().

Done yesterday, no joy. I'll read the thread and see if any other helps
are
available. Since the laptop is actually being cleaned off from the prior
user, I might just grab the original Toshiba Restore CD, and let it wipe
everything and start it again from square one.

Sure would like to fix it though, for adding to troubleshooting library.
  .

Rich, you have any thoughts on this one?
