Hello, All...
This is certain to stir up a hornet's nest, but I don't mean it to do so. I
just need some clarification.
I've been reading Al Stump's book, "Cobb," about a hometown favourite of
mine, and am fairly surprised -- well, not too much, really -- as to what
kind of a monster Tyrus Raymond Cobb truly was.
What I'm wondering is this: If 1/3 of what Stump wrote is true, what is Cobb
doing in the Hall of Fame, given that one's behaviour off the field is taken
into consideration in deciding who goes into the Hall of Fame and who
doesn't, e.g. Orlando Cepeda? Cobb admitted to murder, he beat up players
and umpires alike, he beat his two wives, he beat one of his children with a
whip, the list goes on and on. Pete Rose, if my memory serves, got the boot
from baseball for gambling on baseball, but no evidence was ever given that
he gambled on his own team. Someone, help me with the finer points on this.
It's been a few years.
Cobb was one of the greats on the field, but was a rotten Peach off the
field, and is in the HOF for his performance on the field. Rose is kept out
of the HOF for his performance off the field, but not on, and he too was one
of the greats. What am I missing here?
