Problem is, employers all too often are not the company owners,
they are also employees. And all too often they want to fire
someone to cover up their own screwups. Or because the worker
refused to do something stupid or dangerous.
When my current boss was new he wanted me to change some
programming in ways that would have massively screwed up the
operation. I didn't actually refuse, just pointed out how really
not so good that would be.
I now realize I should have just asked him to jot down some
notes on how he wanted it to work, then go ahead and make the
changes.
Never should I even consider making such a change by verbal
order from this guy. I've heard him blame another worker for
disasterous changes he ordered. Guy's a real scapegoater.
Fortunately the union kept that man from being fired. We also
had a Mexican immigrant employee (legal) retire recently. On his
last day the boss thanked him for the sensitivity education.
Which was a reference to the complaints to the civil rights
people. I know the retiree, one of the best. So the boss
deserved whatever he got.
