First, I disagree that it was not 12-18 inches.  Keep in mind that the 
left-centerfield camera makes the outside pitch to lefties look closer to the 
plate than it really is.  So as bad as those pitches looked, in fact, they 
were even WORSE than they appeared.
Second, McGriff would have had to move right up on the plate to reach those 
pitches.  What would he do, then, with a pitch right on his hands?
