It took nearly twenty years, but it appears that the Cowlitz of Washington
State will finally gain federal recognition. There only remains a 180-day
comment period which ends in August at which time the Interior Department
will make its final ruling.
Twelve tribes have made it through the process since 1978.
It's taken twenty years, three thousand three hundred pages of documents
weighing one hundred seventy-eight pounds, hundreds of volunteer hours and
much work by attornies and historians.
One and a half million dollars was awarded the Cowlitz in the 1970s but the
a federal agnecy refused to pay a "non-existent" tribe. That money has now
grown to ten million dollars today. There are one thousand five hundred
Cowlitz and they own seventeen acres.
Information for the above post taken from "The Oregonian", March 1, 1997.
