KALERA ASHLEY was thinking about Re: Ritalin and keyed into cyberspace:
KA>MP> I suspect that there will be fewer in the middle income area.
KA>MP> And, I doubt many Blacks and Hispanics.
KA>Why?
KA>I'm very interested in this largely because the statistical analysis
KA>that has been done so far has determined that there are few people of
KA>color with ADHD, but it has has failed to distiguish whether that is
KA>because there are proportionately few people of color in the upper
KA>classes, where ADHD is most likely to be diagnosed.
KA>If ADHD is part of the "frontier complex", and that explains the high
KA>incidence among whites in colonized countries, it should also be
KA>found in high numbers among Americans of Asian descent, as well as
KA>Hispanics, and in relatively low numbers among American Indians and
KA>those of African descent...although, with the level of intermarriage
KA>that's gone on over the centuries, that could be really hard to
KA>determine.
I would not expect to find it among the Asian peoples to any great
extent. Most of the Asians did not come to the US as the Northern
Europeans did.
I would not expect many ADHDers to be Black, for the same reason.
KA>As the only woman of color I know who has ADHD, this is of particular
KA>interest to me. My black ancestors who came here did so under their
KA>own volition to farm and make their fortunes, so they may have been
KA>influenced by a "frontier" set of genes which they passed on to me.
Exactly my point, in reverse.
KA>Likewise, it may have come from my white ancestors. According to
KA>Thom Hartman's hypothesis, though, the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of
KA>my indian ancestors was conducive to the survival of ADHD
KA>individuals, so who knows?
KA>I think ol' Thom's a crock anyway.
