I have a couple of "sovereigns" - British gold pound coins. I haven't had
them valued, but I suppose they're worth a fair amount.
But they're in good condition, as were the Rands that were traded for
1000 euros. Condition is critical to the value of coins. The $100
coin that the kid sold was in poor condition. No collector would have
wanted it. It contained a fraction of an ounce of gold, and the value
of that gold was basically the value of the coin.
