SHEILA KING spoke of Whole Language to DAN TRIPLETT on 08-01-96
SK>There was a very heated discussion about invented spelling a few
SK>months back in k12.chat.teacher. I can understand allowing a child to
SK>spell words however on a rough draft, but then they should have to
SK>correct them in order to turn the paper in for the final copy. Later
SK>I will look for some of those posts and cross-post them here.
I would agree. It seems only natural to teach these "early writers"
that spelling is important to any final draft. When I write (even in
this forum) I don't worry about my spelling until Im ready to save it.
I have an electronic speller as well as my well-worn Webster.

SK>I understand what you're saying about not using a purchase package as
SK>a "bible" ...I use lots of different resources for my math classes.
SK>However, given what we had discussed previously about many teachers
SK>not having had sufficient training in Whole Language, and given a
SK>teacher's busy schedule and insufficient planning time, a purchase
SK>package might just've seemed to some schools/teachers like the only
SK>way they were going to pull-off a mandated implementation of Whole
SK>Language. Someone who doesn't feel well grounded in Whole Language,
SK>and being unsure of what they are doing, is going to cling more to a
SK>program of that type than someone like yourself who feels
SK>knowledgeable and confident about what they're doing. And I can't
SK>blame such a teacher. I would blame the system or the admin who is
SK>forcing them to implement something like this without sufficient
SK>training and support.
Very true. Even though I feel confident and knowledgeable about Whole
Language, I would think a WL curriculum package would make a great
resource for anyone including myself. Like you said, It wouldn't become
my "bible."
