Silvertips are made by Winchester - and as their name implies are
silver in color. Not sure what they are made of, aluminum of
some sort is frequently reported. What ever they are they result
in excellent expansion.
They are what is reported to have been used by the FBI agent that
shot Randy Weaver's son at Ruby Ridge.
As for as shotgun shells go, the 3" allow for more powder and
heavier shot loads. The boxes should be marked with the powder
and shot weights, so a quick look on the boxes should answer your
questions. For example a 3" in 20 ga is frequently reported to
be equal to a 12 ga 2 & 3/4".
