subject: Re: Class Size Over-Rated

-> I taught at a flagship state university (Michigan State University)
-> in the math dept. from 1969-1972.
-> There were kids that came to class stoned (either drugs,
-> alcohol, or just staying up all night).
-> HOWEVER, MSU has over 40,000 students (I think).
-> Percentage-wise, it was extremely small -- maybe a dozen students at
-> most in my 3-year tenure there.
You might also take into account the years during which you were working
there. Flower Power time. Isn't it likely that it was considered, at
least among the college set at that time, slightly more acceptable to be
stoned in public than among today's college set?
I'm sure there are, even today, some students who attend classes
impaired. It even happens in the high schools. I know it happens
occassionally at our high school. There are kids I've suspected, but
never enough to do anything about it. Oh, I take that back. There was a
kid I taught a couple of summers back during summer school. I know he
was going out and taking a few tokes of marijuana after class ended
before he came back for algebra tutoring privately with me.
But at all the universities where I've taken coursework, I've never
noticed anyone in class who was impaired. Not like I was looking for it.
There may well have been one or two. But I wouldn't say it was a problem
in class if I didn't notice it.
