In simple terms, the clouds get hungry and the high frequency signals
taste better than the low frequency signals, which they spit out and
allow to go on and on and on and on over greater distances.
Or, we could get into a physics discussion over the reflective and
absorption properties of the atmosphere (troposphere and strarosphere
and other layers) and how RF signals behave in each of those layers.
