 Because someone on the writing team got cute and drew attention
 to said physical difference in an episode of DS9. Once that
 happened, the issue leapt out of the realm of mere production
 issues and into the realm of Trek universe continuity.
 I've abstained from such debates myself; I think it was a
 mistake on the part of TPTB to open that particular can of
 gharghmey. But, they did it, so you can't just dismiss the
 change as "Gene wanted it that way" any longer. From the
 POV of the *characters* of the show (at least the
 non-Klingons), there's some unanswered questions, and fans
 of the show, being...well...fans of the show  are also
 naturally speculating as to the answers. }}:->
