First things first: download SharpDevelop:
http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/ . It's a full C# IDE, and a
pretty good one (not as feature rich as VS of course) - and of course free.
You'll need a C# compiler, but that comes with the .NET SDK which is
downloadable from MS:

(version 1.1).

VS.NET for C# is not very expensive, so if you get anywhere near having to
do something "real", I'd recommend you to buy a copy.
