Yes! Go for it! I quit on Halloween 1984 and am still not smoking. I used
the AA program. Whenever the little beast in my chest reached up in my
throat and SCREAMED for nicotine and tar, I wouldn't give it any for 20
minutes (sometimes ten to tell the truth) Then, I'd say, well I made that
ten now try for ten more. In my non-smoking fourth step, I discovered that I
used the dullness that a good smoke gives me to hold off emotionally when I
was on the phone, when there was a lot of people around, boy did I use
tobacco to keep cool!! I discovered that I wasn't as healthy as I thought
though I had 'good' sobriety. I drank gallons of water. I used distilled
water and kept it cold. It tasted good and I reminded myself how good things
were getting to taste. It also kept the screeming meemies from taking ove
because it diluted the gunk in my blood left over from smoking. I took
another third step with a solid Aa member who would no more think of giving
me 'just one' puff than 'just one' shot of rye. I showered a lot because my
body was putting out smoker's odours. One day at a time (one minute at a
time sometimes) but. like booze, the craving leaves and it goes faster if we
are grateful for each little improvement that comes along. Go for it!
Eileen, you'll appreciate the better health, the quicker thinking etc. for
years - at least I do.
