FG@]RSLet me butt in here for a second- it was my understanding that the
FG@]RSletters R and Y [ and their converse S and G] were used for the test
FG@]RSmessage because between the two, all of the bits that are used to form
FG@]RSthe letters are used. This way, the system is tested for activty on all
FG@]Ricky the gentleman who maintained the Western Union machines in my area
FG@]did some work on my first Model 28 many moons ago and we were discussing
FG@]this. The said RY and/or the QBF sequence will put the mechanics of a
FG@]machine through all possible motions. He had been working ont he things
FG@]since before WW II so I have accepted his info as probably pretty
accurate.
The letters R and Y were used because they exercised all the various
actuators/vanes/etc. in the teletype. I'll probably get this backwards
but the R is equivelant to 10101 and the Y is 01010, since RTTY uses
Baudot 5 bit.
