The only 'southern star' that comes immediately to mind is Belle Starr. 
Did she ever play that part?  She certainly was /equipped/ for it.  :-)

We don't actually have a star that provides the same function as Polaris. 
Instead we rely on some geometrical juggery-pokery, using the axis of the
Southern Cross & a cross-sectioning of the two 'pointer' stars (i.e.
the Centauri pair).  The *intersection* of the elongated axis of the Cross,
down to the horizon, and a line drawn from the bi-sectioning of a
(imaginary) line between the pointers, down to the horizon, indicates
South.
