Instead we rely on some geometrical juggery-pokery, using the axis of the Southern Cross & a cross-sectioning of the two 'pointer' stars (i.e. the Centauri pair). The *intersection* of the elongated axis of the Cross, down to the horizon, and a line drawn from the bi-sectioning of a (imaginary) line between the pointers, down to the horizon, indicates South.
