You can claim anything is defendable in court. That doesn't make it =
so. There is a difference between you format shifting a copy of media =
you own and trading pirated copies.
Then you continue into how you are entitled to do as you wish. You =
have made this clear which is why I brought it up. It comes across in =
almost everything you write on electronic media and pirating.

Why do you make everything personal? I make a statement that I believe =
reflects the reality of the situation and you turn it into a personal = dig.
Do you have any idea of how many thousands of dollars I have spent on =
pre-recorded DVD's? I have a bookcase that is 6 shelves of nothing but =
commercial DVDs so don't give me that steal shit. I buy what everything = I
want (heck I own 2 copies of the firefly series, one for me and one = for
loaning to friends), if I download the same thing to save me the = work of
ripping and encoding it too fucking bad, that's called format = shifting
and it's defendable in court.
what I don't do, is accept that how I use the DVD's I buy is anyone's =
business but mine. I have not signed any contracts to further expand the =
copyright holders rights beyond those provided by US copyright law.
So, when the new HD-DVD's come out, I may buy them but I'll be damned =
if I'm going to let anyone tell me I can't watch them on whatever device =
I have. But that's me, I'm a geek who understands how to make this stuff =
work as I want.
Everyone else will have their own reasons, and I believe that many of =
them who find their high resolution LCD monitors, HD TV's, $9k plasma =
TV's won't allow them to play HD content via dvi input are going to find =
a way to make them play HD content, and I believe that solution stands a =
very good chance of including the fileshare networks, which is going to =
really hurt the market that requires special copyprotection enabled =
hardware.
They idiots are providing more motivation to violate copyrights. A lot =
more motivation.

Irrelevant. People like you may intend to steal what you can but =
you would anyway.

HDCP is such a stupid idea. All it takes is one person to hook =
into the monitor signal after the decryption or one person to build an =
HDCP capable recording device and all the protected media will end up on =
the file share networks completely unprotected. HDCP is an idea that's =
doomed to failure, and if the content is something people want to see = and
those people don't have HDCP capabilities guess where they are going = to
get the content instead of buying it?
