Originally, Silvertip was Winchester's brand name for their hollow point
rifle bullets with a silver colored tip to protect the point of the bullet
during handling. They earned an enviable reputation for performance on game
ranging from deer on up. I see now that Winchester (or one of its
successors) is applying the same honored name to hollow point pistol
cartridges as well. I've never tested the pistol rounds but I've never heard
any negative comments about them either.
As to the shotgun shells, the 3 inch shells carry more shot and powder.
Originally they were intended for duck and goose shooting where ranges could
be expected to be longer. Remember that a shotgun's effective range depends
upon pattern density and, therefore, the more shot, the denser the pattern
will be at a given range. Contrary to popular belief, 3 inch "Magnum"
shotgun shells don't propel the shot any faster than 2&3/4 inch shells, they
just throw more of it. They also kick harder because they're throwing more
shot. Heck, I've got some 2&3/4 inch handloaded shotgun shells that come
within an RCH of matching 3 inch factory shells. They'll rattle your teeth
when fired.
