If you have no OS preferences, I'd recommend looking at the Postfix MTA
(www.postfix.org). It's a breeze to configure, very flexible in its
configuration, and reliable. I use it on my server in a Canada data
center, and it ran for well over a year without any problems. I had to
take it down when I upgraded the OS, it's been running since then.

The mailing list for Postfix provides excellent support.

I know that SUSE Linux uses Postfix in its distributions. I tend towards
FreeBSD and OpenBSD, but you'll have to upgrade from sendmail to postfix
with those two. It's not a big task, but just something n the checkoff
list.

Having said all that, if all you want is a reliable SMTP server to receive
the mail and a POP3 server to deliver to clients, then you might want to
look into some of the email services that provide email hosting for
corporate client outsourcing.
