It isn't. The c-in-a-circle symbol is an acceptable substitute for the
word "Copyright" (in some circumstances); and "(c)" is an attempt to
represent that symbol in ASCII -- but "(c)" *isn't* that symbol, legally.
It's all a bit silly, but you can avoid the mess by just spelling out
"Copyright". (No symbol is required.)

Nowadays, it's copyrighted as soon as you write it, whether you put a
notice on it or not. You have to explicitly give up the copyright. The
notice may help if you have to actually sue anybody, though.
... There is a fine line between a challenge and a pain-in-the-ass.
