One should try to achieve a noise level at least 80db down from 1 watt
in the power amp stage after the volume control. With speakers that
output 100dB/Watt that amounts to less noise than a mosquito makes.
It basically sounds dead and unless there is a power indicating lamp one
can't even tell if the damn thing is on or off when there is no music.

On the previous battery topic, I've found that carbon-zinc batteries are
much quieter than alkaline batteries when used in condensor microphones.
The alkalines tend to make more sputtering noise which is far more
objectionable than an equivalent level of constant hiss. Is there
something to this or is it just me?

That's about 99% of the human race, you're being an eliteist, man!
