JS> Carswell has factory building F-16s across the main runway.
JS> I believe that production is still going on there. But there
JS> has been so many changes, mergers and such I do not know
JS> where the F-16 is made now.
I feel certain that now that Lockeed has acquired them that they are
still in production with the F-16 but now it's called the Lockeed F-16
instead of the Convair F-16 as we may have known it.
JS> I went there in 1958 with the first B-52Fs and retired from
JS> there in 1966 after we cam back from Arclight just prior
JS> to Xmas 1965.... I have heard of one case where a grandson
JS> of one of the pilots is now flying B-52s. :)
I was first in FTW in 1958, married a gal from there. Came back there
to live full time in l966 and have been having "Having a Sliced with
everything and a Large One" at Angelo's ever since. Sure miss the
sawdust floors. Was out to Carswell about 2 weeks ago and I must
confess the base looks better now than when it was Active Duty. It
seems to be better kept up and that does seem strange.
JS> Carswell was not the BEST duty... But it sure beat B-52
JS> duty like Loring, K.I. Sawyer, Minot, Kinchloe, etc......
I would rate it at the top of my list compared to those places. At K.I.
Sawyer they start testing the Snow Blower Equipment in early Sept just
in case.
JS> The 9th BS, 7th Bomb Wing is now flying B-1Bs at Abilene
JS> which was due to close in B-47 days, about 1962... Their
JS> final callsign was FIGMO Control...
I'm not sure I understand this. Are you saying that Abilene is now
slated to close. I feel certain that it is still open. My ole BOQ is
now quarters in the Federal Prison at Webb at Big Spring, TX.
