> Let me know how the new sub works out when you get it! :)
The sub arrived in good shape and was a snap to connect. Moving around the
120 pound monster for best placement was a different matter though. Finally,
after three moves it was just right. I have about 20 hours on it and it is
beginning to loosen up. So far it is giving me just the effect I was looking
for. I can dial it in for accurate bass reproduction...or...twiddle it for
exaggerated bass for Home Theater apps. To explain: I sometimes like the Pro
Logic effect in TV shows and of course from my LDs, but I often prefer or
must
have the volume levels somewhat less than theater level. At some point
without
the subs, I loose the lowest bass feel. With the sub I can exaggerate the
lower bass and still have the feel at lower SPL. The space ships and
submarines can now still rumble without ticking off anyone trying to catch a
nap or reading in the next room.
When turned to live performance levels and listening to most of my music I
can barely tell that it is there since moving my mains to a better position.
On the lowest of the lows there seems to be a reinforcement and finer
definition that was not there before, but it is hard to explain. I guess it
is
just easiest to say that I am very pleased, the sub has all the speed I hoped
for, and can reach way down there with plenty of reserve. For the money and
match to my mains I do not believe I could have done better.
On another topic: If I were to upgrade my system I doubt my amps would get
a priority. The Carvers have served me very very well and only a monster
Bryston that a friend brought over, has made my system sound better. And
comparing the 4X price tag to the small difference I detected, I wouldn't
even
consider it. The Carver Pre-Amp is absolute TOP DRAWER !!! I doubt I will
ever
get rid of it. I have the Carver CD with tubed output...a very rare bird I
have liked since the beginning. Until they design and build a
Transport/Reader
to RAM to DAC unit that does not require anti jitter doo dads and different
enhancers, I will probably stick with it. I will replace the dual cassette
unit as it is nothing special. I will also be going to an outboard
ProLogic/AC3 unit of undertermined brand in the coming year. At present I am
using the totally passive Chase Pro Logic decoder. For $99 it does very well
but lacks many of the features of the Yamaha, Lexicon or Meridian. I had the
external Carver unit which looked suspiciously like the Audio Source Mod 3,
inside and out. It also burned up three time in ten months and spent 8 of the
ten months being repaired or in transit. I finally screamed loud enough to
get
my money back and was using the Chase as a back up while waiting for the
idiots at Carver Tech support to get the thing right. I was not pleased with
their work or more especially their attitude.
So most of my pionted little barbs at Carver is not about their products
of
which I happily have a house full. It is about their service and a few people
therein who treated me more like they were doing me a very big favor than
servicing a product for a very loyal customer.
Were I to become wealthy, I am afraid I would have to rethink my Best Bang
For The Buck/The $ensible Sound thinking and really become outragious in my
selections...especially amps, if for no other reason than because they are
there. But that isn't very likely.
Oh, BTW, if you get a chance, read The $ensible Sound report on the
Stereophile Hi Fi SHow in New York. You will laugh your butt off!!!! They
review (mini) about 50 products and booths/rooms and really let the fur fly.
The articles are like listening to your friend who owes no one and no company
anything...over a couple beers...describe how goofy the world and audio has
gotten. One of the best articles I have had the pleasure of reading. And
probably one of the most accurate.
Cheers, John
