-> Do you have Amazons? I just read an article in 'Bird Talk' about how
-> much Amazons love to shower. They sound like fun.
I don't have any Amazons right now, but I've had several and I'll
testify that they go absolutely NUTS under a shower! A spray bottle is
good, but I've used the water hose! They have such fun, it's almost
unbelievable. I couldn't believe it the first time I sprayed mine.
They also liked to be put outdoors for the warm spring rains! (WIRE the
door on the cage closed!)
They can even tell time! I have a timer on a water sprinkler that they
used to know when it was gonna come on! Scream bloody murder a few
minutes before it was due to spray.
-> but I am confident that I can re-shape the behavior at least
-> somewhat.
Well, ya gotta remember that one of his hands is right in the middle of
his face! That bill is one of his feelers! An Amazon tongue is one of
the wonders of the world! I never ceased to be amazed.
-> I really want to get a Dove too. Can they be tamed? Does yours let
-> you
Mine will "Step up" like a parrot, but is not really 'happy' about it.
I pick him up and handle him a little every day and he doesn't struggle,
but he will fly away (Generally goes to his cage) if I let him sit on my
palm. He loves to get on the bathroom floor and stalk around in the
bath-mat looking for maize seeds he's thrown out of his cage. Sometimes
he laughs when I chase him around on the bathroom floor.
-> enough to it now that I could touch it if I wanted to, but I don't
-> want to frighten it.
They're very calm BECAUSE they've never been bothered. They don't much
like being handled even when tame, as I understand. My dad's doves
would light on his head and shoulders, but I never saw one that wanted
to sit in his hand.
My Amazon used to ride around on my office managers shoulder by the
hour. Loved to steal his cigarettes out of his shirt pocket and shred
them!
-> The other bird that I really want is a Crow. American crows are
-> illegal
I had a Grackle one time that was GREAT I'll get another eventually if
I live long enough. They're funny as can be!
We feed all the wild birds, and have a back yard full. Alas we're about
to lose a lot of our habitat to a giant subdivision. Three different
species of hawk are gonna be displaced.
Probably the Kiskadees and the greenjays as well, as the Anis.....
