| subject: | Strange network printing problem |
From: "Antti Kurenniemi"
Hello.
I came across a weird situation in a small company, where there are 3
computers in a workgroup (no server) and of thos 3 only one cannot print to
a networked printer. The printer is HP somethingorother Laser, hooked up to
a HP JetDirect box. The JetDirect box has a fixed IP (in the 192.168 range)
which I can ping from the two other computers and also my own computer when
I plug it in (there is a router that does DHCP), but not from the
troublesome third computer.
My system is XP Pro, the two working computers are NT4 (yes, old workhorse
still going strong) and W2k. The one that's not working is XP Home (sigh).
It is also running F-Secure internet security suite, but it didn't work
even when I disable that firewall and the XP's own firewall. Strangest
thing is, it used to work just fine, but then ("we haven't changed
anything") it suddenly stopped working.
So, anyone have any ideas as to what I should check? I have an extra
network printer server box which I thought about trying, but I doubt that
will do the trick (because at the moment even pinging the Jet Direct box
doesn't work, so I figure it's something at the computers end of the cable
rather than the printer)... Anything else?
TIA,
Antti Kurenniemi
