DR> I'm writing for my dad, who is having a hard time getting his money's
worth
DR> from AOL. He's been on AOL for several years and paid for it under the
"one
DR> year" plan. Now he's having trouble with it.
DR>
DR> He has a 486 system with a 33.6 modem, Windows 3.11. He has the AOL
softwar
DR> installed and also MS Internet Explorer...not sure if it's 3.0 or 4.0
now,
DR> he's tried both and has the same trouble with both. The problem? He tries
t
DR> get on the web and very seldom is successful in staying on it. He seems
o
DR> always get dumped off.
It could be his phone line noise. Ask him to listen carefull while using it
for making a phone call fro noise or a crackiling sound. Althouhg since the
Phone company dosen't promise a very quiet line unless you pay extra for a
"Equalized" line he also should call and have the phone company check it
lso.
Does he call anybody else with his modem? If so has he had any trouble with
those calls. This is of coursing he is not running up against an Inactivity
timer that AOL has instituted. Most are somewhat rerasonable. As an Example I
am now using K-Onloine here and they have theirs set at 15 minutes. And if
ou
call up an extra large web page and spend time studying it 15 minutes goes by
fairlly quickly.
