I didn't test it under BeOS, but it should not be too different to the
other UNIX versions (even though BeOS isn't strictly UNIX, but then neither
is Cygwin), so you can just use makefile.unix, which defines __UNIX__, then
have:

#ifdef __UNIX__
#ifdef __BEOS__
#define PROGNAME "WIMM/BeOS"
#endif
#ifdef __FreeBSD__
#define PROGNAME "WIMM/FreeBSD"
#endif
etc.

In hindsight I should've added

#ifndef PROGNAME
#define PROGNAME "WIMM/Unknown"
#endif

after all the others in the __UNIX__ section!
