I think that at the time there was a lot of willful belief going on at
CBS. Mapes and her coworkers believed, all along, that Bush had gone
AWOL. Then, a source called offering the written proof.
Without verifying what "everybody knows", they ran the story, which then
became another example of why groupthink shouldn't ever be allowed to
trump the two verified sources rule in journalism. And in intelligence
gathering efforts in pretty much any context...
It took *me* about 10 minutes to duplicate those forgeries with my own
PC and printer and a copy of Microsoft Word.
