Sheila King tells Virginia Blalock about
Technology In The Classr on 06-28-96 10:24:
-> I found that getting to work on the computer was something my
-> students looked forward to. Heck, if doing someone on the computer
-> would help kids to be more enthusiastic, I am all for it.
SK> The point I was trying to make, I guess, is that there is a
SK> cost/effectiveness breaking point. Certainly I'm all for getting kids
SK> to be more enthusiastic. (BTW, how many computers did you have in your
SK> classroom? Two? Four?)
Computers in my classroom?? HEHEHE! My class did get to use the
computers once a week many weeks and one year they were next door to
me and we took advantage of that. I do understand about the cost
issue, though. Our district did not get many computers until the
state education agency made it an issue on an audit they did on the
issue.
SK> If someone is donating the computers, I'd take
SK> them. Free is the right price. If they are $500 to $1000 and you can
SK> somehow manage to buy a few of them out of your budget, and you think
SK> they will be more effective than whatever else you might have spent
SK> that same money on, then OK. The question, I guess, is what MIGHT you
SK> have done with that money which was spent on computers, and would it
SK> possibly have been as effective (or even more effective) than the
SK> computers, or not?
That's certainly a good question. I would probably buy a little of
both computer and non-computer things.
... A computer, a modem, a phone line... what else do you need?
