Personally, I think it has to do with the evolution of consciousness.

The last 500 years in the West has been stage to the story of the struggle 
of mind against body and superstition.  That the mind-ascendent would want 
to break free of the fears and restraints of the body would make perfect 
sense to me.  It's one of those things that filters into our individual 
consciousness from beneath as much from actual discourse.

I would add that there's a hint of the intuition that we are more than our 
bodies thrown in there as well.
