Actually, after watching Lofton all year, I'd have to pretty much agree with
Bruce. I always thought he was a great outfielder, but I saw him misplay
many, many fly balls this year. And granted, he caught a lot of those he
misplayed, due to his speed, but a lot of them he didn't get to, because he
came in when he should have been going out or vice versa. Or if he got to
them, he'd drop them.
When Andruw Jones was in for him while Lofton was out with his injury, it was
like night and day. Andruw seemed to know where the ball was going before it
was ever hit, and he got to balls that Lofton wouldn't dream of getting to.
You'd think AJ was the veteran gold glover and Lofton was the rookie.
As for Lofton vs. Grissom, while I didn't see much of Grissom this year,
based on what I saw him do as a Brave, there's no comparison. Grissom gets a
MUCH better jump on the ball, has a surer glove, and takes away a lot of
singles with his ability to play shallow.
