-> Obviously this rip-off artist lacks quite a bit of technical skill, as well as
-> integrity.

I second that.

-> I have been photographing art - Portfolio drawings and paintings, etc., to
-> produce slides for submission by the artists (mainly High School students)with
-> the goal of gaining admission into Art Schools.
->
-> The originals are certainly NOT my work, but the slides are. What would happen
-> if I choose to produce advertising copy using those slides - not to sell copies
-> of the original works - but to promote the quality of MY work?
->
-> I don't think that would be a violation of *copyright* - but I think that a
-> "Property Release" would be in order.

Hmmmm....you would be Using the slides to make a physical reproduction of
the picture in your advertizing brochures, is that correct? You would then
be reproducing the work of the artist. I would expect you should get
permission to do that. But hey, these are students and they will not only
probably be willing to give you permission, they will be thrilled to see
their work used in that way. That likely means you will have to print
extra brochures as they will probably gather some to give to friends and
relatives .

I don't have that problem as, so far, everyone who has asked me to do this
sort of work has wanted prints, not slides. They have then used the prints
on their own brochures and/or websites. I show other artists what I can do
for them by sending them to the websites or showing them the brochures the
artists have created using my photos of their work.
