Very old science fiction conceit -- I mean, even I'm not old enough to
remember when it began. And these things tend to become traditions,
which is a polite way of saying that writers recycle 'em. Anyone know
who first used it? It strikes me that whoever did may have been
influenced by Christian eschatology.
