I guess so, it must be different for tropicals to cold water fish. My only
experience of keeping fish in tanks is with small koi carp and they are
terribly fussy when it comes to water conditions. They also put out a lot of
waste which does mean that the bacteria in the filter have to be well
established.

I wish we could run our tank empty for just a week!

Not bad. We made a mistake with our first batch of fish, we waited three
weeks and put 4 small fish in and lost the lot :( We then went away for a
week on holiday, waited another six weeks and then put five small koi in. One
died, he had a swim bladder problem at the very least and went downhill so
quickly that we killed him. The other four survive and are growing like it is
going out of style - one has gone from 2 inches to 8 inches since last
September!

Depends what they cost! Our first five fish cost about $75 so we weren't too
pleased! It was an expensive lesson. I'm still amazed at how much longer an
aquarium needs to get the filter bacteria ready when compared to a pond.
